I think we were just adopted.

J and I were walking down the street to Blockbuster to rent some movies. It was a fairly nice evening and it's not a long hike. As we were walking past the last house on the block, a young black cat walked up to us. He seemed to come off the front porch. We petted him for awhile and he was really friendly and cute. There was no collar.

After a few minutes, we continued on. He followed us. We shooed him away, but he didn't get the hint. We were hoping he would wander off once we started crossing the street, but the dumb cat started crossing the semi-busy street right after us. I picked him up and brought him back to the sidewalk, and headed back over. He still followed us.

We figured he must belong to the house we had just passed, so we knocked on the front door. They recognized the cat, but he wasn't theirs. He had just showed up today, being really friendly and trying to come inside.

Uh oh.

We didn't want him following us across the busy street where he could get run over, so we walked back to our place and let him follow us into the backyard. We left him locked in there while we continued on to Blockbuster. If he really wanted to get out, we'd seen cats jump the fence without a problem. We would figure out what to do with him when we got back. He was really starting to look cute.

We headed off and when we came back, and yup, he was still back there, lounging on our deck like he owned the place. We brought out a bowl of water, and I went around and opened the gate again. We didn't want to lock him in, just keep him safe.

We played with him awhile, and also brought out a bowl of cheerios, in case he was hungry. I took a few digital pictures. He is really really cute. And friendly. And he really wants to get inside the house.

We figure if he has a home, he'll wander off and find it. Or his owners will start looking for him. The gate will remain open, so he's free to come and go. If he stays around for a few days, we'll take him to a vet to get him checked out. And then, we might let him into the house.

Did I mention how cute he was? And how soft his fur was? And how friendly he seemed to be?

But, he's not our cat. So, we can't get attached to him. Not until he decides he wants to stay. And no one else claims him. We were always meaning to get a cat when we moved into a house, but we haven't gotten around to it yet. But, the decision may have been made for us.

He's really cute.
