Two trips to Home Depot. Ever since we bought the house, it's been a weekly event. It's almost like, "It's Saturday. Time to go to Home Depot. What do we need to get? I don't know, I'm sure we'll find something"
Today is shelf building day. We're building four 1 x 8 x 2.5ft shelves to hold CD's in the living room/den. I bought my first power tool since moving in, a jigsaw. We bought two 1 x 8 x 6 ft boards of white pine, twelve wooden brackets to hold up the shelves, three per shelf, wood stain, two brushes, and paint thinner to clean them. We spent today cutting and staining. We were going to use left over wood to use as permanent bookends for the CD's, but that didn't work out too well. It's hard to cut eight 2.5" pieces of wood completely level with a jigsaw. So we ended up going back to Home Depot for molding to use instead. That worked out better. There are now four shelves, twelve brackets, and eight bookends, all stained, sitting in the garage. They look really good, a nice dark natural wood color. There's a very strong smell in there now. Tomorrow, we'll leave the garage door open to air out the place. We're not trying to get high. Also, tomorrow, we'll put up the shelves.
I haven't done a wood working project since BOOOOOOTH! So this is a lot of fun. I really do like building things. I'm not just not very good at it. Hopefully these shelves come out good. I know we can just go in and get pre-made shelves that would almost work. But I don't think they would look as good, or be as much fun to make. It's a nice feeling to put something together all on your own. Makes it feel more yours. I think that's also why I prefer cooking to going out to dinner.

jd7a and I a little while to agree on exactly what we were building to hold all our CD's. Drawing pictures helps a lot. I thought we were building shelves to hang on the wall. She thought we were building a cabinet with shelves. After much wrangling and mud wrestling, we finally figured it out. Luckily, this was before we ended up at Home Depot, otherwise it could have gotten dangerous. I'm glad we're building something that's part of the walls. I think it will look nicer, and it will also add to the value of the house.
Also bought at Home Depot, screws, protective goggles and bug killer. Just to be complete.
Last night went to a surprise party for someone I barely know. It was the girlfriend of a friend/ex-coworker/poker companion. I can't remember the last time I hid in a dark room and then jumped up and down screaming "Surprise!" and blowing noisemakers when someone walked in. It was half fun and half weird. Also got to see some PcOrder people that I haven't seen for awhile. Some of them still work for Trilogy, and thus are very busy and always out of town. Still, didn't know all that many people there, and J. knew even less, so we left pretty early.
Today, after finishing our construction tasks for the day, we sat and watched television. A lot it. We have so many tapes from the past many weeks that we haven't seen yet. We've been getting home too late on the weekdays, and have been busy on the weekends. Watched one episode of Six Feet Under, and two episodes of Smallville. We still have an episode of Smallville, three or four episodes of Friends, three episodes of Enterprise, and two episodes of The West Wing waiting. There's also some random movies and specials.I think its a lost cause. We're just going to have to accept that we can't watch all the TV we want to. And we haven't gone to see a movie in months. Our media quotient is far too low. I'm not sure where the time goes. Maybe into reading LiveJournal all the time?
